Summer is when most people can take a real vacation, and it is a strong season in many places. Alaska’s salmon runs build, western rivers settle after runoff, northern lakes are open and comfortable, and offshore fishing heats up on both coasts.
It is also the season of heat, thunderstorms, crowds and, on the coasts, hurricanes. A good summer trip picks the right water and plans around the weather.
The seasonal patterns here come from state agencies, tourism offices and local shops. They are broad patterns, and conditions vary by year.
Where the fishing is in summer
Kenai Peninsula, Alaska: salmon runs
On the Kenai Peninsula, summer is salmon season. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s run timing chart lists early-run sockeye on the Russian River from mid-June to mid-July, and Kenai River sockeye from July through mid-August. Fish and Game’s sonar page says the late sockeye run enters the lower river in early July, peaks in late July for about seven to ten days, and ends in mid to late August. Pinks arrive from mid-July, and coho from late July. Rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai is listed from mid-June.
King salmon are a different story. Kenai River kings have been closed to fishing in recent seasons, catch-and-release included, by emergency order. Check current emergency orders before planning around kings.
Southwest Montana: after runoff
In Southwest Montana, an Ennis fly shop describes the Madison’s salmonfly hatch as beginning around late June and running two to three weeks or more, with giant golden stones alongside. July brings PMDs, yellow sallies and caddis, and late August can bring flying ant hatches on warm afternoons. The shop notes the river is usually clearing by late June as runoff subsides. Hoot-owl and other restrictions can change through the season, so check current rules.
Minnesota Lake Country: summer walleye
In Minnesota Lake Country, Explore Minnesota says walleye usually leave spawning areas in early June, then hold around drop-offs, edges and weed beds through summer. Bright days push them deeper or into weeds; cloudy days and evenings bring them up onto shallower structure. Early morning and evening are the best times.
Outer Banks: offshore season
The Outer Banks visitors bureau lists blue marlin peaking in June and white marlin and sailfish most plentiful in August and September. Summer catches in its seasonal guide also include mahi-mahi (dolphin), wahoo, cobia, flounder and Spanish mackerel. From the surf and piers, summer brings flounder, croaker and small bluefish.
Cabo San Lucas: marlin and dorado
Visit Los Cabos lists blue and black marlin from July through October, and dorado from July through November. Warm late-summer water is also described as productive for wahoo and sailfish. See Cabo San Lucas.
Florida Keys: mahi-mahi and bridge tarpon
The Florida Keys tourism office lists mahi-mahi as best from around April through September, permit on the flats from April through September, and tarpon near the Middle Keys bridges through July.
Also in season
- Northern Michigan: Charter boats troll Lake Michigan for Chinook and coho through the summer. In the rivers, Pure Michigan says Chinook begin moving upstream in late summer and are usually catchable by mid-August, and that coho fishing peaks in late summer and early fall. See Northern Michigan.
- Costa Rica, northern Pacific: Sport Fishing magazine puts the north’s billfish season from May through December, and the tourism board describes Guanacaste marlin fishing all year. See Costa Rica Pacific Coast.
- Lake of the Ozarks: The Missouri Department of Conservation lists catfish as good through September and suggests trolling small deep-diving crankbaits for crappie in summer. See Lake of the Ozarks.
Matching the trip to your group
- Families with young kids: a Minnesota lake resort or an Outer Banks rental near the piers. Short outings, easy access, lots to do between sessions.
- Serious salmon anglers: the Kenai in July and early August, timed to the sockeye run.
- Fly anglers: southwest Montana from late June, when rivers clear and the big summer hatches begin.
- Offshore anglers: the Outer Banks for blue marlin in June and white marlin and sailfish later in summer, or Cabo from July.
- Couples: the Florida Keys or Cabo, with a half-day charter and plenty of time off the water.
How to plan a summer trip
Book early. Summer weeks are popular for vacations, so reserve lodges, guides and rentals well ahead.
Fish early and late. Heat, bright sun and afternoon storms make mornings and evenings the best times on many waters.
Plan around storms. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center lists the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 and the eastern Pacific season from May 15, both to November 30. Watch forecasts, know your charter’s weather policy and consider travel insurance. See safety and weather.
Protect yourself from the sun. Long sleeves, a buff, a wide hat and polarized glasses. See our packing list.
Check regulations closely. Summer brings in-season changes: emergency orders on salmon water, hoot-owl restrictions on trout rivers. Check right before you go.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Assuming king salmon are open. Check current Alaska emergency orders.
- Planning a river trip during runoff. In the mountains, early June can still be high water.
- Ignoring heat on the water. Dehydration and sunburn end trips. Bring more water than you think.
- No storm plan. Lightning and tropical systems are real summer risks.
Month by month

- July: Kenai sockeye peak, Cabo marlin begins, Keys mahi-mahi.
