June is when summer fishing travel begins in earnest. Alaska’s early salmon runs start, western rivers come out of runoff, northern lakes settle into summer patterns, and offshore billfish arrive on the Atlantic coast. School is out for many families, so plan and book ahead.

It is also the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which NOAA lists as June 1 to November 30.

Where to go in June

Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s run timing chart lists early-run sockeye on the Russian River from mid-June to mid-July, and rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai from mid-June. Kenai River king salmon have been closed to fishing in recent seasons by emergency order, so check current emergency orders before planning around kings.

Southwest Montana. An Ennis fly shop describes the Madison’s salmonfly hatch as usually starting in late June and running two to three weeks or more, moving upriver, with giant golden stones alongside. It notes the river is usually subsiding and clearing by late June. Early June can still be high water.

Minnesota Lake Country. Explore Minnesota says walleye usually leave spawning areas in early June as water warms and weeds grow, moving to drop-offs, edges and weed beds. Early morning and evening are the best times.

Outer Banks, North Carolina. The visitors bureau lists blue marlin as peaking in June, cobia in the sounds peaking from late May to early June, and flounder, croaker and small bluefish from the surf and piers in summer.

Florida Keys. The Keys tourism office lists tarpon near the Middle Keys bridges, permit on the flats, mahi-mahi and blue marlin all in season in June.

Also consider: the northern Costa Rica Pacific Coast, where Sport Fishing magazine lists Guanacaste operators naming June among their peak billfish months.

Planning notes for June

  • Book early: Reserve guides and lodging early if your trip is built around a salmon run or the salmonfly hatch.
  • Runoff: Check river conditions with a local shop before a Montana trip.
  • Storms: Watch tropical forecasts for coastal trips and know your charter’s weather policy. See safety and weather.
  • Rules: Alaska issues emergency orders in season, and other states can change rules too. Check current regulations. See fishing licenses.

Seasons are broad patterns. Runs, hatches and weather vary from year to year.
