School Break Family Fishing Trips

How to plan a family fishing trip around spring break and summer vacation: which destinations fit those weeks, what is commonly biting, and how to keep it fun for kids.

For most families, the calendar decides the trip. School breaks set the dates, and the job is to find good fishing within them. The two big windows are spring break, which usually falls somewhere in March or April, and summer vacation, roughly June through August.

The good news: both windows line up with commonly fished seasons in several of our destinations. The challenge is that everyone else is traveling too, so planning ahead matters.

Seasonal patterns here are broad and come from state agencies and tourism offices. Fishing and weather vary by year, so check recent reports before you go.

Spring break (March and April)

Spring break is a transition season. Warm southern water is the safest bet. Northern lakes may still be cold or iced over, and mountain rivers can be high.

Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are a natural spring break fishing trip. The Keys tourism office lists bonefish prime months starting in March, describes tarpon as a spring fishery, and has sailfish season running through March. For younger kids, VISIT FLORIDA points to spring break and summer as good times for feisty, easy-to-catch fish such as grunts and yellowtails off Marathon. Reef trips and party boats are the easiest family introduction.

Lake of the Ozarks

For a drive-to spring break in the middle of the country, Lake of the Ozarks works well. The Missouri Department of Conservation names spring as one of the best times for largemouth bass, with crappie in creek channels in the bays, and catfish fishing good from April.

Outer Banks

The Outer Banks visitors bureau says the surf and pier season starts in March, with red drum, bluefish and other species in its spring lineup. Spring weather on the coast can be cool and windy, so pack layers.

Louisiana Gulf Coast

On the Louisiana Gulf Coast, the state tourism office describes redfish as available year-round and speckled trout as peaking from spring through fall.

Summer vacation (June, July and August)

Summer opens up the north. Lakes are warm, Alaska’s salmon runs build, and coastal offshore fishing is in full swing.

Minnesota Lake Country

The classic summer family fishing vacation: a lake, a cabin or resort, and walleye for dinner where rules allow. Explore Minnesota says walleye usually leave spawning areas in early June and hold around drop-offs, edges and weed beds through summer, biting best early and late in the day. See Minnesota Lake Country.

Outer Banks in summer

In summer, the visitors bureau lists flounder, croaker and small bluefish from the surf and piers, and Spanish mackerel and cobia among summer catches. The bureau’s guide to teaching kids recommends simple spinning outfits and natural bait, and notes that some piers rent or sell tackle.

Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

For older kids, an Alaska trip timed to the salmon runs is a big adventure. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game lists Kenai River sockeye from July through mid-August, with the late run typically peaking in late July, and coho from late July. See Kenai Peninsula.

Northern Michigan

Pure Michigan says Chinook salmon are usually catchable in rivers by mid-August, which can make a late-summer trip to Northern Michigan work for families with older kids.

Florida Keys in summer

The Keys tourism office lists mahi-mahi as best from around April through September, and permit on the flats in the same window.

Sample school break trips

A spring break week in the Florida Keys: two reef or party boat half-days, a backcountry trip with a guide for older kids, and beach and pool time between. Pick one base so you are not packing up every day.

A spring break drive to Lake of the Ozarks: a rented boat or a guided half-day for crappie and bass, plus shore fishing near the lodging in the evenings.

A summer week in Minnesota Lake Country: a cabin on a lake, early and late walleye sessions, swimming in the afternoons, and one guided day to learn the lake.

A summer week on the Outer Banks: pier fishing in the mornings, a head boat or inshore half-day, and beach days between.

A summer Alaska trip with teenagers: three or four days on the Kenai timed to the July sockeye run, with a guided day first and some trout fishing for variety.

How to plan around school breaks

Book early. School break weeks are busy at family destinations. Reserve lodging and charters well ahead.

Choose the right trip length. Half-day boat trips, pier sessions and short shore outings suit kids better than full days. Read our fishing with kids guide.

Plan for weather. Spring fronts bring wind. Summer brings heat, thunderstorms and, on the coasts, hurricane season, which NOAA lists as starting June 1 in the Atlantic and May 15 in the eastern Pacific. See safety and weather.

Check license rules for kids. Age thresholds differ by state. See fishing licenses.

Leave time off the water. Beaches, pools and exploring keep kids keen to fish again tomorrow.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Booking a northern lake for an early spring break. Ice and cold water can limit fishing.
  • Ignoring summer heat. Fish early and late, and bring plenty of water.
  • Long offshore trips with young kids. Start inshore or on a pier.
  • Leaving it late. The best family rentals and charters go first.

Frequently asked questions

Where should we go fishing over spring break?

Warm, easy-to-reach water works best. The Florida Keys tourism office lists bonefish prime months starting in March and tarpon in spring, and VISIT FLORIDA points to spring break as a good time for easy-to-catch fish such as grunts and yellowtails off Marathon. Lake of the Ozarks is a drive-to option where spring is a best time for bass.

What is a good summer fishing trip with kids?

A lake vacation, such as Minnesota walleye fishing from a resort, or a coastal trip with piers and half-day boats, such as the Outer Banks. Older kids may enjoy an Alaska salmon trip timed to the July sockeye run.

How do we avoid crowds during school breaks?

You cannot avoid them entirely, but booking early, staying slightly away from the busiest town, fishing early in the morning and choosing weekdays for charters all help.
