A sailfish trip is a billfish trip that works at many skill levels. You book a crewed charter in the right season and let the captain find the fish. The tall, colorful dorsal fin gives the fish its name, and its colors can change when it gets excited.

There are two forms. Atlantic sailfish live in tropical and temperate Atlantic waters. Indo-Pacific sailfish live in the Pacific and Indian oceans and grow much larger. The Florida Keys and the Outer Banks are Atlantic sailfish trips. Cabo and Costa Rica are Pacific trips.

Where to go for sailfish

The Florida Keys. Winter is sailfish season here. The Keys tourism council puts it at November through March. The Keys sit between the Atlantic, the Gulf and Florida Bay, so a winter trip can mix sailfish offshore with backcountry fishing on calmer days. Charter fleets run from Key Largo to Key West, and you can base in Islamorada or Key West. Start with the Florida Keys guide.

The Outer Banks, North Carolina. The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center lists sailfish from March into November, with the best months from May through October, and the visitors bureau says white marlin and sailfish are most plentiful in August and September. The Gulf Stream runs roughly 30 miles off the coast, and the same charters fish for marlin, tuna and mahi. See the Outer Banks guide.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Visit Los Cabos says sailfish are best in late summer and early fall, the same stretch as the area’s dorado and blue and black marlin. Catch and release is the general rule there. See the Cabo San Lucas guide.

Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Costa Rica’s Central Pacific marinas, Marina Pez Vela in Quepos and Marina Los Sueños, host major sportfishing tournaments from January through April, including the Quepos Billfish Cup in February. Guanacaste in the north is known for marlin all year. Seasons for sailfish vary along this coast, so ask an operator in the port you are considering. See the Costa Rica Pacific coast guide.

When to go

Put together, the patterns give you a calendar that covers most of the year:

  • Winter: the Florida Keys, from about November through March. Costa Rica’s Central Pacific tournament season starts in January.
  • Summer: the Outer Banks, with a May through October peak and August and September often best.
  • Late summer and early fall: Cabo.

Our month pages, such as January and August, show what else is running. These windows are typical patterns. Weather, water temperature and bait shift every season, so ask a charter for recent reports before you commit.

How the trips work

Sailfishing is charter fishing. You book a boat with a captain and mate, run offshore and fish rigged or live baits while the crew watches for fish. When a fish bites, the crew sets you up on the rod and coaches you through the fight.

Ask whether rods, reels and bait are included; in Los Cabos they usually are. In U.S. Atlantic waters the charter boat’s federal HMS permit covers everyone aboard. In the Keys, boats range from small center consoles to large air-conditioned sportfishers, so you can choose how comfortable you want the day to be. In Los Cabos, charters supply gear, live bait and tackle, and they typically include the Mexican fishing license.

If you plan to release your fish, talk with the crew before the trip about how they handle photos and release, so the fish spends as little time out of the water as possible.

Choosing a destination

  • A winter escape: the Florida Keys. You stay on U.S. soil, have plenty of lodging and can fish the backcountry, reef or offshore depending on the wind.
  • A summer billfish trip in the U.S.: the Outer Banks, where you can also try for marlin, tuna and mahi on the same days.
  • A Pacific trip: Cabo in late summer and early fall, or Costa Rica during its tournament season.
  • Families and first-timers: a half day is a gentler start than a full day. Some Keys captains run trips built for families.

Before you book

  • Licenses and permits. In U.S. Atlantic waters, billfish need a federal HMS permit on the boat. A charter covers this. State saltwater license rules vary, so check our fishing license guide and the agency before each trip.
  • Release practice. Ask whether the crew tags fish and how they handle photos.
  • What is included. Ask about tackle, bait, licenses, food and drinks, fish cleaning for any other catch, and the crew tip.
  • Trip length and run time. Ask how far the boat runs to find fish and whether a half day is realistic in your month.

Our guide to choosing a fishing charter has a full checklist. For more offshore options, see marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna.

Frequently asked questions

When is sailfish season in the Florida Keys?

Winter. The Keys tourism council puts the sailfish months at November through March, which makes sailfish one of the better reasons to fish the Keys in the cooler months.

Can I catch a sailfish and a marlin on the same trip?

In some places and months, yes. On the Outer Banks, sailfish, white marlin and blue marlin all run in summer, and the same Gulf Stream charters fish for all three. Ask the captain what has been biting lately.

Are sailfish usually released?

On most charters, yes. Hundreds of Outer Banks billfish are released each year, and catch and release is the general rule in Los Cabos. If you want to keep one, ask first, because federal size limits and permits apply in U.S. Atlantic waters.

Do I need a federal permit to fish for sailfish?

In U.S. Atlantic federal waters, the boat needs an HMS permit. A charter's HMS Charter/Headboat permit covers everyone aboard. If you fish from your own boat, check NOAA Fisheries and the state agency before you go.
