August is a month of overlap. Alaska’s sockeye run is tapering while coho build, Great Lakes salmon start nosing into Michigan rivers, and offshore billfish are active on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides. It is still peak summer travel, and on the Atlantic side it is the run-up to the hurricane season’s peak, which NOAA’s National Hurricane Center puts at September 10.
Where to go in August
Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Fish and Game lists Kenai River sockeye through mid-August and says the late run ends between mid and late August. Coho run from late July through mid-October on the Kenai, and Russian River coho from early August through the end of September. Pinks are listed through August. That mix makes August a flexible month for a salmon trip. Check current emergency orders before you go.
Northern Michigan. Charter boats troll Lake Michigan for Chinook and coho through the summer, and this is when the river runs begin. Pure Michigan says Chinook begin their upstream migration in late summer and are usually catchable by mid-August, and that coho fishing peaks in late summer and early fall.
Outer Banks, North Carolina. The visitors bureau lists white marlin and sailfish as most plentiful in August and September. Spanish mackerel reach the surf in August, and pompano are listed from August through September.
Cabo San Lucas. Visit Los Cabos lists blue and black marlin from July through October and dorado from July through November, and describes warm late-summer water as productive for wahoo and sailfish.
Florida Keys. The Keys tourism office lists mahi-mahi as best through September and permit on the flats through September, with bonefish in their prime months.
Also consider: Southwest Montana, where an Ennis fly shop describes flying ant hatches on warm, muggy afternoons in late August, often after thunderstorms.
Which August trip fits you
For salmon, choose the Kenai for a full Alaska trip or Northern Michigan for a drive-to river trip. For billfish, the Outer Banks and Cabo both have strong late-summer windows. For an easygoing family week, the Keys and the Outer Banks offer piers, reef trips and beaches.
