- Bonefish
- A resident fish, caught all year. An Ambergris Caye lodge rates bonefishing excellent from April through October, with big schools on the flats in late spring.
- Permit
- Also a resident fish, and Turneffe Atoll lodges describe permit fishing as consistent through the year, from poled skiffs and on foot on the oceanside flats.
- Tarpon
- Resident tarpon are around all year, and a migration of larger fish arrives from spring into October. August and September are rated the peak months on Ambergris Caye.
Why go
Belize puts three of the most wanted flats fish in one small country. The barrier reef and offshore atolls shelter miles of shallow, clear water, and bonefish, permit and tarpon all live on it. Belize is one of the few places where you can realistically try for a Grand Slam: one of each in a single day.
Permit are the fish that set Belize apart. They are the hardest of the three to fool, and they are here all year. One Turneffe Atoll lodge calls Belize the permit capital of the world, and many anglers come back season after season for another shot.
The trip suits fly anglers first, from beginners learning on schools of bonefish to experienced permit hunters. It also works for couples and mixed groups, since the lodges and island towns offer diving, snorkeling and trips inland. The tradeoffs are cost and travel: most trips mean an international flight, then a small plane or a boat to reach the water.
The fishing
Bonefish
Bonefish are resident in Belize and caught every month. At Turneffe Atoll, anglers wade the firm oceanside flats and regularly see big schools, which makes it a good place to learn. There are also larger fish for anglers who like to stalk singles in very shallow water. On Ambergris Caye, one lodge rates bonefishing excellent from April through October, with schools of a couple of hundred fish in late spring.
Permit
Permit are also resident, and Turneffe lodges describe the fishing as consistent through the year. Most permit turn up as singles or small groups on flats and bars, with larger tailing schools at times. Most permit fishing is done from a poled skiff, though some wade fishing is possible on oceanside flats. On Ambergris Caye, March is noted for schooled permit and October for larger fish.
Tarpon
Belize has resident tarpon all year and a migration of larger fish on top of that. At Turneffe the migratory season runs from about May to October, with fish in the creeks, channels and lagoons of the atoll; many tarpon jumped there weigh 60 to 90 pounds. On Ambergris Caye, migrating tarpon start showing on the reefs in April, and August and September are rated the peak, with the highest catch rates and the largest fish. Early mornings are often the best time for tarpon.
The Grand Slam
A Grand Slam is a bonefish, a permit and a tarpon caught by the same angler on the same day. Belize is one of the few places where all three share the same water, and lodges here plan days around the attempt. It is a goal, not a guarantee. Permit alone can take several days, and wind and light decide how well you can see fish. Your odds are best with a guide during the months when migratory tarpon are around. For the same idea closer to home, see our Florida Keys Grand Slam guide.
Reef, backcountry and offshore
Inside Turneffe Atoll, mangrove bays, creeks and lagoons hold snook, snapper, jacks and barracuda, fished with poppers and streamers on a fly rod or with spinning gear. Barracuda also patrol the reef in good numbers. Ambergris Caye lodges run reef trips for snapper and grouper and offshore trips for wahoo and tuna, and Placencia has reef fishing and deep water beyond it. These make good options for a windy day or for anglers who want fish for dinner.
Where to fish
Turneffe Atoll
Turneffe is a coral atoll about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, the largest of only four coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere. It combines fringing reef, back-reef flats, seagrass, large lagoons and mangrove forest, and is home to about 260 fish species. The entire atoll and the surrounding sea are protected as the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve, established in 2012 and co-managed by a local stakeholder group and the Belize Fisheries Department. Lodges here sit right on the flats, so fishing starts close to your room.
Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye is in the north, with the town of San Pedro and a mix of lodges, resorts and villas. Guides fish the shallow flats, the barrier reef and blue water beyond it. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust has monitored bonefish pre-spawning activity in Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve on Ambergris Caye, and has run permit tagging studies in northern Belize.
Placencia
Placencia is a 16-mile peninsula on the southern coast. Its reef-protected flats hold bonefish, tarpon and permit, the barrier reef sits beyond them, and offshore boats look for marlin, tuna and wahoo. The peninsula also has beaches, and trips inland reach Maya sites and jungle trails, which makes it a good choice for a group with mixed interests.
Belize City area
Belize City is mainly the gateway. The international airport is here, domestic flights leave for the cayes and the south, and Turneffe lodge packages include the airport and boat transfers out to the atoll.
Charters and guides
The flats lodge model
Most anglers book a lodge package. You stay on or near the flats, meals are included, and each day you fish with a guide from a skiff. At Turneffe Flats, for example, packages run on set arrival days and include airport and boat transfers, meals and daily guided fishing, while licences, marine reserve fees, gratuities and equipment rental are extra. Fishing days there run about eight hours, timed around tides, with early starts for tarpon on request. On Ambergris Caye, El Pescador fishes one or two anglers per boat with a guide, for fly or spin anglers.
Before you book, ask:
- How many anglers share a skiff, and do you wade or fish from the boat?
- Which flats does the lodge fish, and how long are the runs?
- Are licences and marine reserve fees included?
- What tackle is provided, and what should you bring?
- What happens on a day too windy for permit?
Our flats fly trip checklist covers the rest.
Fly or spin
Fly fishing is the tradition here, but most lodges welcome spin anglers. One Ambergris Caye lodge suggests 7- and 8-weight rods for bonefish, the 8-weight doubling for permit and small tarpon, and 10- to 12-weight rods for big tarpon. Pack a floating tropical line and plenty of backing. See traveling with fishing gear.
Catch and release
Bonefish, permit and tarpon are protected in Belize as catch-and-release species under regulations passed in 2009, and lodges release them. The flats fishery is also big business for Belize: a 2022 economic study put its value at about BZ$246 million a year, and Belize banned gillnets countrywide in 2019. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust has worked in Belize since 2006 on juvenile bonefish habitat and on tagging adult fish, and points to coastal development and beach traps as the main threats.
Good handling matters as much as the rules. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust found that a bonefish held out of the water for more than ten seconds is six times less likely to survive. Use a dehooking tool when you can, wet your hands, have the camera ready before you lift a fish, and keep big tarpon in the water. Belize’s coastal authority also recommends barbless hooks, circle hooks with bait and short fights.
Where to stay
Choose the fishing first, then the base. A Turneffe lodge puts you on the flats with fishing as the main event. Ambergris Caye adds San Pedro’s restaurants, dive shops and resorts, and is quicker to reach. Placencia suits a group that wants beaches and inland trips alongside the fishing. Our fishing lodges guide explains the lodge model.
Trip costs
Flights and the lodge package make up most of the cost. Lodge packages usually bundle lodging, meals, guiding and transfers, while bar, tips, rental gear, licences and marine reserve fees are often extra. A licence is a small cost by comparison; CZMAI publishes current fees. We do not quote lodge or guide prices, since they vary by lodge, season and package. Try our trip budget calculator.
Getting there and around
Belize International Airport (BZE) has nonstop flights from many U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Los Angeles, with more routes running seasonally. From there, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and to Placencia. El Pescador guests, for example, take the short flight to San Pedro, then a boat ride of about seven minutes. Turneffe lodges handle the boat transfer to the atoll. Confirm schedules with the airline, since routes change.
Weather is warm all year. Turneffe Flats records air temperatures of roughly 80 to 95°F, with water a few degrees warmer in summer than winter, and prevailing winds from the east-southeast. Wind and cloud matter for sight fishing, so build in spare days.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That overlaps the best tarpon months. Spring avoids it entirely. For late-summer and fall trips, book flexibly, consider travel insurance and watch the National Hurricane Center. See our trip safety and weather guide. U.S. travelers should check the State Department’s Belize page for entry requirements.
Licenses and rules
Anyone fishing for leisure or competition in Belizean waters needs a sport fishing licence from the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute, whether or not they release their fish. You can buy one through CZMAI’s online portal, at its Belize City office or from authorized agents, in daily, weekly and yearly terms. The yearly licence has its own residency and in-person requirements.
Marine reserves such as Turneffe Atoll charge their own fees, and lodges often add those to your bill. Rules and fees change, so check CZMAI before every trip and ask your lodge what it covers. Our fishing licenses guide has general background.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to fish the Belize flats?
Bonefish and permit live in Belize all year, so there is no bad month for them, and an Ambergris Caye lodge rates bonefishing excellent from April through October. Migratory tarpon arrive from spring into October, with August and September often the peak. Spring avoids the hurricane season; late summer offers the best tarpon but overlaps it.
Can you catch a Grand Slam in Belize?
Yes, it is possible. A Grand Slam means a bonefish, a permit and a tarpon caught in the same day, and Belize is one of the places where all three share the same flats. It is never a sure thing; permit alone can take days. Your best odds come with a guide and the summer months when migratory tarpon are around.
Do I need a fishing licence in Belize?
Yes. Anyone sport fishing for leisure or competition needs a licence from the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute. You can buy one online, at the CZMAI office or through authorized agents, in daily, weekly and yearly terms. Many lodges do not include it, so ask, and check CZMAI for current rules.
Can I keep a bonefish, permit or tarpon in Belize?
No. Belizean regulations protect all three as catch-and-release species, and lodges release them. Some other fish, such as snapper and grouper, may be kept for the table where rules allow; ask your guide.
Which is better for a first trip, Turneffe Atoll or Ambergris Caye?
Turneffe suits anglers who want to wake up next to the flats at a remote lodge with fishing as the main event. Ambergris Caye is easier to reach by domestic flight and has the town of San Pedro, diving and more for non-anglers. Both offer bonefish, permit and tarpon with guides.
When is hurricane season in Belize?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That overlaps the best tarpon months, so watch the National Hurricane Center and choose flexible bookings and travel insurance for late-summer and fall trips.
