July is peak summer vacation and a strong month for several very different trips. In Alaska, the Kenai River’s big sockeye run builds to its peak. At the tip of Baja, marlin season begins. Western trout rivers settle into summer hatches, and northern lakes are at their most comfortable.

Heat, afternoon storms and summer crowds are the main tradeoffs. Fish early, book ahead and keep an eye on the weather.

Where to go in July

Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Fish and Game’s sonar page says the late Kenai River sockeye run enters the lower river in early July and peaks in late July, with the peak usually lasting seven to ten days. Pinks arrive from mid-July, and coho from late July. Russian River early-run sockeye are listed through mid-July. Regulations can change in season by emergency order, so check before you go.

Cabo San Lucas. Visit Los Cabos lists blue and black marlin from July through October and dorado (mahi-mahi) from July through November. July is the start of that window.

Southwest Montana. An Ennis fly shop describes the Madison’s salmonfly hatch running into early July, followed by PMDs, yellow sallies and caddis in July, then nocturnal golden stones, which wane by mid to late August. The regional tourism office notes that regulations and hoot-owl restrictions change through the season, so check current rules.

Minnesota Lake Country. Explore Minnesota says summer walleye hold on drop-offs, edges and weed beds, stay deep or in weeds on bright days, and move up onto the shallow tops of sunken islands on cloudy days and after sunset.

Florida Keys. The Keys tourism office lists mahi-mahi best from around April through September, permit on the flats through September, and tarpon near the Middle Keys bridges through July. Blue marlin are an occasional offshore bonus in summer.

Also consider: the northern Costa Rica Pacific Coast, where Sport Fishing magazine puts the Guanacaste billfish season from May through December and the tourism board describes marlin fishing there all year.

Planning notes for July

  • Book early: Reserve guides and lodging well ahead for Alaska salmon trips and summer lake vacations.
  • Heat and storms: Fish mornings and evenings. Know your charter’s storm policy. See safety and weather.
  • Hurricane season: The Atlantic (June 1 to November 30) and eastern Pacific (May 15 to November 30) seasons are under way. Watch forecasts for coastal trips.
  • Rules: Check current regulations right before you go. See fishing licenses.

Seasonal patterns are broad and vary from year to year. Run size and timing, hatch timing and water conditions all shift.
