January splits fishing travel in two. In the north, lakes are frozen and the season is about ice houses and walleye. In the south and the tropics, January falls inside the Florida Keys sailfish season and the published billfish peak on Costa Rica’s central and southern Pacific coast. You can chase warm saltwater or embrace the ice.
Weather is the main planning issue. Winter fronts bring wind on the coasts and deep cold in the north. Build in spare days.
Where to go in January
Florida Keys. January sits in the middle of the Keys sailfish season, which the Keys tourism office lists as November through March. The same source lists kingfish as most active from September to March, and redfish and snook as best from December through July. It is an easy winter escape with reef, backcountry and offshore options.
Costa Rica Pacific Coast. Sport Fishing magazine’s billfish guide puts the central and southern Pacific peak from November through April. Operators it lists around Los Sueños, Quepos and the Golfito area name January through April as their sailfish peak. The northern coast runs on a different calendar.
Cabo San Lucas. Visit Los Cabos says yellowfin tuna hit hard from September through January and calls fall and winter excellent for all-around action. Hammerhead, thresher and mako sharks are noted in winter and spring.
Outer Banks, North Carolina. For anglers who do not mind the cold, the visitors bureau lists giant bluefin tuna from early January through late March, usually caught and released. Tell your captain in advance if you want to target them.
Minnesota Lake Country. Ice fishing season. Explore Minnesota notes that more than 150 resorts and guides rent fish houses, from simple day houses to heated sleepers, and that the state’s Take a Kid Ice Fishing weekend is held each January. Follow local ice safety guidance and ask resorts about current conditions.
Planning notes for January
- Crowds: The holiday period at the start of the month can be busy at warm destinations, so book early if your dates are fixed.
