- Salmon
- On the east side of Lake Michigan, coho fish best in early spring and again in late summer and early fall. Chinook start up rivers such as the Pere Marquette in late summer and are usually catchable by mid-August.
- Steelhead
- Steelhead enter rivers like the Pere Marquette from late October into early May, and many fall fish spend the winter in the river. Pier and surf anglers at Ludington also catch them in late fall.
- Trout
- A Baldwin outfitter fishes the Pere Marquette for brown and rainbow trout in every season, with steelhead from late fall into spring. Rules differ by stretch, so check which water is open before you go.
- Panfish
- Hamlin Lake and its bayous are open to fishing all year, and perch and bluegill are among the main targets.
- Walleye
- Hamlin Lake is open to fishing year round, and walleye are one of its main targets along with bass, perch and bluegill.
Why go
Ludington gives you three different fishing trips from one town. Charter boats leave Pere Marquette Lake to troll Lake Michigan for salmon, the harbor and channel fill with Chinook in late summer, and the Pere Marquette River, one of Michigan’s best-known salmon, steelhead and trout rivers, ends right here. Hamlin Lake, just north of town, adds walleye, bass and panfish.
The town calls itself Michigan’s number one salmon fishing port, and it is the southern gateway to our northern Michigan region. It suits drive-in anglers from the Midwest, families who want beach days between fishing trips, and fly anglers headed for the Pere Marquette.
It is also an easy sell to non-anglers. Ludington State Park, the Big Sable Point Lighthouse and the SS Badger car ferry give the rest of the group a full week.
The fishing
Lake Michigan. Summer charters troll for Chinook and coho, with steelhead mixed in. DNR fishing reports describe boats working straight out from the harbor, south of town, and north toward Big Sable Point, often in 60 to 300 feet of water, with plugs and spoons run anywhere from the top 40 feet down to near bottom. Chinook like cooler water than coho, so they are usually caught deep with downriggers or lead-core and copper line, and closer to the surface at dawn and dusk.
Harbor and river runs. From late summer, Chinook move into the harbor, the channel and Pere Marquette Lake, where anglers jig, drift eggs and troll. They are usually in the rivers in catchable numbers by mid-August.
Steelhead. Lake-run steelhead enter rivers from late October to early May, and many fall fish spend the winter in the river before spawning in spring. Pier and surf anglers at Ludington take them in late fall, and the Pere Marquette is a winter and spring steelhead river.
Inland water. Hamlin Lake holds walleye, bass, perch and bluegill and is fished all year. The Pere Marquette also holds resident brown and rainbow trout.
These are patterns from DNR reports and agency pages, not a calendar. Wind closes the big lake for days at a time, and warm water slows the harbor bite, so read the DNR weekly fishing report the week before you go.
Where to fish
Lake Michigan and Big Sable Point
Big Sable Point, north of town at the edge of Ludington State Park, is a regular landmark in DNR reports from June through October. In June, boats have taken Chinook there in deep water; by late summer and fall they also fish straight out and south of the harbor. A charter is the simplest way to fish it, since the water is deep and the fish move.
The piers, breakwater and channel
The North Breakwater Light stands at the harbor entrance near Stearns Park Beach, and the piers and channel are Ludington’s shore fishery. Late-summer reports describe Chinook caught in the harbor and in front of the piers, and late-fall reports describe pier anglers catching steelhead when they could get out safely.
Take that last part seriously. The DNR names Ludington among the Lake Michigan parks where rip currents tend to build, warns that structural currents form along piers and breakwalls, and notes that waves crashing over a pier can knock a person into the water. Stay off the piers when waves are up, watch the beach flags, and keep kids well back from the edge. Our fishing trip safety guide covers more.
Pere Marquette Lake
Pere Marquette Lake is Ludington’s protected harbor basin, joined to Lake Michigan by a short channel, with the Pere Marquette River flowing in at its far end. The city’s Ludington Municipal Marina has transient slips, fuel, pump-out and a fish-cleaning station, and the SS Badger arrives and departs through the harbor. In late summer, Chinook gather here before running the river, and a DNR report from May 2022 described good northern pike fishing in the lake and the lower river. A 2008 Game & Fish article described winter steelhead taken through the ice here, though ice comes and goes from year to year.
The Pere Marquette River
The Pere Marquette system begins east of Baldwin and reaches Lake Michigan at Ludington, with no dams or impoundments anywhere on it. In 1978, the 66.4 miles from the forks down to US-31 became a National Scenic River. It supports resident trout, runs of salmon and steelhead, and a naturally reproducing salmon population, and it was the site of the first brown trout stocking in the United States, in 1884.
Rules change along the river. The stretch from M-37 to Gleason’s Landing is flies-only, catch-and-release water, and other stretches have their own rules, so check the Michigan Fishing Regulations for the exact water you plan to fish. Our Pere Marquette River guide covers access, guides, permits and etiquette.
Hamlin Lake
Hamlin is a roughly 5,000-acre lake on the edge of Ludington State Park, held back by a dam on the Big Sable River. You can fish it all year for walleye, bass, perch and bluegill, and DNR reports have described crappie and pike catches in late winter. The park has a boat launch, an accessible kayak launch and a small fishing pier just above the dam. See our Hamlin Lake guide.
The Big Sable River
A 1-mile stretch of the Big Sable River runs through Ludington State Park from the Hamlin Dam to Lake Michigan. The park describes spring and fall runs of salmon, lake trout, steelhead and brown trout along its Lake Michigan shore and up this river. Special hook rules apply on this stretch from August 1 to November 1; the park page lists them, and the river mouth sits outside the park’s swim area, with currents that have carried swimmers into the lake.
Pentwater
Pentwater, a village on the lakeshore south of Ludington, makes an easy side trip. DNR reports describe Chinook caught inside the Pentwater channel in late summer and salmon in the Pentwater River in fall, and Charles Mears State Park has an accessible fishing pier at its south end.
Ice fishing
Hamlin Lake is the winter draw. Game & Fish has called it one of Michigan’s top lakes for winter bluegill, with the first-ice action usually on the upper lake once safe ice forms, often by Christmas. Ice varies a lot from winter to winter, and harbor ice can make launching hard into March, so check local conditions before you go out.
Charters and guides
Ludington’s charter captains fish Lake Michigan from spring into fall. Expect an early start and deep trolling with downriggers. Ask the captain where the fish have been that week, how far out they are running, and what happens if wind keeps boats in. The visitors bureau also points anglers to a couple of local restaurants that will cook your cleaned catch.
On the Pere Marquette, Baldwin is the base for fly-fishing guides, and at least one Orvis-endorsed outfitter there fishes the river in every season from boats. A guide is worth it for a first trip, since legal stretches, access and wading vary. See guided vs DIY fishing, choosing a fishing charter and private vs shared charters.
Where to stay
Stay in town to be close to the marina, the piers and downtown. The visitors bureau lists hotels, bed and breakfast inns, cabins and cottages, campgrounds and resorts. Ludington State Park has three modern campgrounds, rustic walk-in tent sites and mini cabins between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan. Baldwin puts you closer to the upper Pere Marquette, and on national forest land along the river you can camp only at designated sites, including the Bowman Bridge and Gleason’s Landing campgrounds. For a cabin on a lake, see lakefront cabins.
Beyond fishing
- Ludington State Park sits between Hamlin Lake and 7 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, with dunes, 21 miles of marked trails, buoyed swim areas on both lakes and paddlesport rentals on Hamlin Lake. A vehicle needs a Recreation Passport.
- Big Sable Point Lighthouse is a 1.8-mile walk or bike ride each way on a sand-and-gravel path in the park. Volunteer keepers run tours and tower climbs from May through October.
- The SS Badger makes four-hour crossings to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, from mid-May to mid-October, plus two-hour shoreline cruises. The city suggests watching it come and go from one of the waterfront parks.
- Stearns Park Beach is the Lake Michigan beach in town, by the North Breakwater Light.

Trip costs
How you fish sets the budget. Pier, channel, Hamlin Lake and river fishing cost little beyond a license and gear, plus a Recreation Passport to drive into Ludington State Park. A Lake Michigan charter or a guided drift-boat day is the main expense, and sharing a boat lowers the cost per person. A summer float on the Pere Marquette adds a small Forest Service permit and day-use fees. Our fishing charter cost guide and trip budget calculator help you add it up.
Getting there and around
Ludington sits where US-10 reaches US-31 and Lake Michigan, about an hour and a half from Grand Rapids, three and a half hours from Detroit and four from Chicago. Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids is the nearest airport with airline service, and Mason County Airport serves charter flights. From Wisconsin, the SS Badger carries cars across from Manitowoc in season. You will want a car to reach the state park, Hamlin Lake and the river access sites toward Baldwin.
Licenses and rules
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources sells licenses and sets the rules. Rules differ between Lake Michigan, inland lakes and trout and salmon streams, and the Pere Marquette and Big Sable have special rules on some stretches. Check the current Michigan Fishing Regulations before each trip. Our fishing licenses guide covers the basics, and the fall salmon run guide covers river etiquette during the run.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to fish for salmon in Ludington?
Charter boats troll for Chinook and coho through the summer, often off Big Sable Point and straight out from the harbor. From late summer, Chinook gather in the harbor, the channel and Pere Marquette Lake before running the Pere Marquette River, where they are usually in catchable numbers by mid-August. Timing shifts every year, so read the DNR weekly fishing report before you go.
Can you fish from the piers in Ludington?
Yes. Anglers fish the harbor piers for salmon in late summer and for steelhead in late fall. Waves can wash over breakwalls and the DNR warns about dangerous currents along them, so stay off the piers in rough weather.
Is the Pere Marquette River flies-only?
Only part of it. The state designates the stretch from M-37 to Gleason's Landing as flies-only, catch-and-release water. Other stretches follow different rules, so check the current Michigan Fishing Regulations and trout and salmon maps for the water you plan to fish.
What can you catch in Hamlin Lake?
Walleye, bass, perch and bluegill are the main targets, and DNR reports have also described crappie and northern pike catches. The lake is open to fishing all year and is known for bluegill through the ice.
Do I need a permit to float the Pere Marquette?
In summer, yes. From the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the Monday of Labor Day weekend, every watercraft on the river between the Forks and Indian Bridge, including tubes and paddleboards, needs a Forest Service permit from Recreation.gov. Most Forest Service access sites also charge a day-use fee.
What is there to do in Ludington besides fishing?
Ludington State Park has beaches on Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake, paddling and a 1.8-mile path to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The SS Badger runs four-hour crossings to Wisconsin and two-hour shoreline cruises in season, and Stearns Park Beach is next to the North Breakwater Light in town.
