A week at a lake cabin is the classic first fishing vacation for a family: a dock, a boat, a beach and fish that bite often enough to keep kids interested. It goes best when the logistics are settled before you arrive, so the week can be about the water.

Start with the booking questions, since a boat package and kid-size life jackets change what you need to bring. Then check the license rules for each state you will fish. Youth exemptions differ a lot, and in some states an adult who helps a child fish needs a license even if the child does not. Pack the kids’ kit and the safety items, and keep the last section in mind every day.
