Venice or Grand Isle? Choosing a Louisiana Fishing Base

Venice and Grand Isle are Louisiana's two best-known saltwater bases. Here is how they compare for offshore access, marsh fishing, lodging, families and hurricane-season planning, with short notes on Lafitte, Hopedale and Cocodrie.

Pick Venice if offshore tuna are on the list or you want the most serious marsh fishing for redfish and trout with a guide. Pick Grand Isle if your trip is part beach vacation, you want to fish from shore or a kayak, or you are bringing people who do not fish. Both are an easy drive from New Orleans, and both put you on the same broad seasonal pattern described in our Louisiana Gulf Coast guide.

Venice: the offshore and marsh specialist

Venice sits near the southeastern tip of Louisiana, where the Mississippi River reaches the Gulf, in Plaquemines Parish, reached by Highway 23. It goes by both “Tuna Town” and “the Redfish Capital of the World,” and the two names sum up the trip.

Offshore access. Venice puts you close to blue water by running out the river. Offshore oil platforms act as fish attractors, and boats fish them for yellowfin and blackfin tuna, red and gray snapper, cobia, tripletail, amberjack and grouper. Parish tourism names the Midnight Lump, South Pass and the Western Delta blocks among the offshore areas. The Sport Fishing magazine profile describes summer as the season for marlin and mahi-mahi, October as strong for big yellowfin and blackfin around the shrimp boats, and winter, weather allowing, as the time for big wahoo at the Midnight Lump.

Inshore marsh. The marsh around Venice holds redfish and speckled trout of all sizes, from good eating fish to big bulls. Redfish can be caught all year, and October stands out, when bulls of 30 to 40 pounds move inside. In summer, guides take anglers into clear backcountry ponds to sight-cast to reds. In May, big spawning trout gather in the bays and beaches at the ends of the river passes. The state tourism office warns that this is no place for novice navigators, so plan on a guide unless you know the water.

Lodging style. Lodging is built around the docks. Venice Marina and Cypress Cove Marina both offer ramps, fuel, tackle, food, guides and on-site lodging. Venice Marina has cabins, houses and boat or houseboat slips, and Cypress Cove has hotel rooms and a few townhomes. Some charters provide their own rooms, houseboats or meals. Expect practical fishing lodging rather than resorts.

Family fit. Limited for non-anglers. Beyond fishing, the main draws are the small town, a photo at the Southernmost Point in Louisiana, and parish sights farther up the road. Venice suits families where everyone wants to fish.

Grand Isle: the beach-based option

Grand Isle is a barrier island in Jefferson Parish with seven miles of beachfront. Parish tourism counts more than 280 species of fish around the island.

Shore and pier fishing. This is where Grand Isle stands apart. You can fish the surf for speckled trout and redfish, or cast from the public fishing pier at Grand Isle State Park. Kayak anglers paddle Caminada Bay for shallow-water fishing, and the Ride the Bull kayak tournament comes each April.

Inshore and offshore. Charters run from the island into the surrounding marsh and offshore. The state tourism office lists tarpon, wahoo, blackfin tuna and blue marlin among Grand Isle’s catches. Grand Isle hosts the International Tarpon Rodeo, founded in 1928 and billed as the oldest fishing tournament in the United States, plus a redfish rodeo on Labor Day weekend.

Lodging style. The state tourism office lists a few small inns and a bed and breakfast in the area, and many visitors camp. Grand Isle State Park has pull-through RV sites with hookups and beach tent sites, and it charges a small per-person entry fee. Drivers heading south onto the island pay a bridge toll.

Family fit. Good. The state park has a designated swimming beach, a 2.5-mile nature trail and lagoons and shoreline that draw many birds. Watch for rip currents, which the park flags as a hazard. A family can mix beach time, crabbing and short fishing sessions without booking a boat.

Other bases worth knowing

Lafitte is an inshore fishing village on Bayou Barataria and an easy drive from New Orleans, so you can stay in the city. Redfish and speckled trout make up much of the catch, and there is a public fishing pier.

Hopedale is listed by the state tourism office as a starting point for saltwater trips, and parish tourism mentions guides who fish from Hopedale to Venice for bull reds in fall and winter.

Cocodrie sits near marsh and beaches with speckled trout and red drum, and barrier islands to the south draw flounder and snapper. It has a marina lodge with rooms, bait and charters.

Seasons and hurricane planning

Both towns follow the same broad pattern. Parish tourism’s calendar lists speckled trout and redfish from January through March, spawning season from April to June, tarpon, bull reds, snapper and flounder from July to September, and redfish and trout again from October through December. The state tourism office names spring and fall as the best time to visit Venice. Summers are hot and humid, with July highs around 89°F.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which covers the Gulf, runs from June 1 to November 30. Activity peaks around September 10, with most storms between mid-August and mid-October. A storm can affect the drive down as well as the fishing. Book with flexible cancellation terms where you can, consider travel insurance, and watch forecasts in the week before you go. Our trip safety and weather guide has more.

Licenses and guides

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries sells licenses and sets the rules. It offers a 3-day Charter Passenger Saltwater license for fishing from a charter vessel with a licensed guide aboard, and charter clients are covered by the captain’s offshore landing permit. LDWF also keeps a search tool to confirm that a saltwater charter captain holds an active Charter Boat Fishing Guide License. Limits and seasons change, so check LDWF’s seasons and regulations page before every trip. For booking advice, see choosing a fishing charter and our charter cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venice or Grand Isle better for offshore fishing?

Venice is the stronger offshore base. It sits where the Mississippi meets the Gulf, goes by "Tuna Town," and its boats fish the rigs and spots such as the Midnight Lump for tuna, wahoo, marlin and snapper. Grand Isle has offshore charters too, but most visitors choose it for the beach, the piers and the marsh.

Which is better for a family trip?

Grand Isle, for most families. Grand Isle State Park has a swimming beach, a nature trail, birding and beach camping, and you can fish from the surf or a pier. Venice is a working fishing town with few non-fishing activities beyond a visit to the Southernmost Point in Louisiana.

How far are Venice and Grand Isle from New Orleans?

Grand Isle is just over an hour and a half from New Orleans by the state tourism office's count. Venice is roughly a two-hour drive, south on Highway 23 through Belle Chasse. Both need a car.

When should I avoid booking?

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. You can still fish then, but book with flexible terms and watch forecasts. The state tourism office names spring and fall as the best seasons to visit Venice.
