Muskie are a trophy fish. Anglers prize them because they grow very large, strike aggressively and fight hard. A muskie trip is usually built around the hope of one big fish rather than a full cooler, so it helps to plan other fishing alongside it.

Muskellunge are the largest of the pikes. They are top predators that eat large prey, from shad and suckers to carp. They often follow a lure all the way to the boat and can strike with only about a foot of line out, so keep your eyes on the lure until it is out of the water. They like clear water and weeds, and where there is little vegetation they use shorelines, drop-offs, submerged points, islands, docks, brush piles and standing timber. As a cool-water fish, they move deeper in summer.

Where to go for muskie

Minnesota lake country. Explore Minnesota lists muskies among the state’s fish, alongside walleye, northern pike, bass, trout and panfish, and counts 11,842 lakes. Lake-country resorts give you a base for muskie days and easier fishing for the rest of the family. See our Minnesota Lake Country guide.

Northern Wisconsin. Hayward celebrates its musky heritage with an annual Musky Festival. It is also home to the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum, with a musky sculpture 143 feet long. The local chamber describes the area’s lakes as crystal clear.

Northern Michigan. Michigan has about 11,000 inland lakes, and the Michigan Charter Boat Association lists musky among the fish its captains target. See our Northern Michigan guide.

Ontario. Northern Ontario promotes muskie fishing on the large waters of Northwestern Ontario. In the south, the Kawartha Lakes, including Buckhorn Lake, are another muskie destination. Lodges range from drive-to resorts to fly-in camps.

Missouri. Muskies are not native there, but the state has stocked them since 1966 in selected lakes, including Pomme de Terre Lake, Hazel Creek Lake, Fellows Lake and Lake 35 at Busch Conservation Area. Fish there commonly run 36 to 45 inches. Stocking is kept very light, at most about one fish per acre each year, so muskies do not cut into other game fish. There is no evidence of successful natural spawning in Missouri, so the population depends on stocking.

When to go

Muskie spawn in early spring at about 50°F water temperature. As a cool-water fish, they move deeper in summer. Beyond that, the best weeks depend on the lake, so ask local guides when their water fishes best and plan around the season openers.

Season openers and closures for muskie differ by state, province and lake. Ontario alone has 20 fisheries management zones with their own seasons. Check the rules before you pick dates. Our June and October pages compare options.

How the trips work

Guided trips. A muskie guide fishes the weed edges, drop-offs, points and other structure where these fish hunt. Because muskies follow lures to the boat, a guide will coach you on finishing every cast. Ask whether they cast, troll (where legal) or both.

Resort base. A muskie trip often works best from a lake resort or cabin. You can fish muskie for part of the day and spend the rest on walleye, pike or bass for variety.

Fly fishing. Northern Ontario’s tourism office publishes guides on fly fishing for pike and muskie. See our fly-fishing trips page.

Planning for release

If you plan to release your fish, talk with your guide before the trip about nets, tools and photos, so a big fish spends as little time out of the water as possible. Ask how they revive a tired fish before letting it go.

Choosing a destination

  • A family lake trip with muskie on the side: Minnesota or northern Michigan.
  • Muskie culture and history: Hayward, Wisconsin.
  • Big water and remote lodges: Northwestern Ontario.
  • A southern option: Missouri’s stocked lakes.

Before you book

  • Licenses. Each state and province sells its own license and sets its own muskie seasons and size limits. See our fishing license guide, and check the agency before each trip.
  • Ask your guide how many anglers per boat, whether they cast or troll, what tackle is provided, and how they handle release.
  • Set expectations. Muskie are a trophy fish. Plan time for walleye, pike or bass too, so everyone in the group gets some action.

Frequently asked questions

How big do muskies get?

Muskies are the largest member of the pike family. In Missouri, where they are stocked, fish commonly run 36 to 45 inches.

Should I hire a guide for muskie?

For a first muskie trip, we'd say yes. A guide who knows where the fish are holding in your week makes the most of limited time, and will have the gear to land and release a big fish.

Is muskie fishing catch and release?

Muskie seasons and size limits differ by state, province and lake. If you plan to keep a fish, check the rules first. Otherwise, plan on a quick, careful release.

Where can I fish for muskie in the South?

Muskies are not native to Missouri, but the state has stocked them in selected lakes since 1966, including Pomme de Terre Lake. The other destinations on this page are farther north: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario.
