Pick Destin if you want an easy beach vacation with fishing built in: party boats, a big harbor charter fleet, deep water a short run offshore, and a calm bay for kids. Pick the Louisiana Gulf Coast if fishing is the trip: redfish and speckled trout in the marsh most of the year, and rig fishing for tuna out of Venice.

The table above lays out the months, costs and logistics side by side. Here is how we would choose.

The short answer

  • Families and mixed groups: Destin. It rates great for families, with kid-focused party boat trips, a long pier and a beach town around the harbor.
  • Inshore anglers: Louisiana. Redfish and speckled trout are fished year-round in the marsh.
  • Shortest run to deep water: Destin. The visitor bureau puts the 100 Fathom Curve about 20 miles out.
  • Offshore for big tuna: Venice, Louisiana, where boats fish the rigs and October is a standout month for large yellowfin.

By month

March through May. Destin’s spring brings cobia along the beaches and off the Okaloosa Island pier, and mahi, wahoo and the surf season for redfish all start in March. In Louisiana, spring is one of the most comfortable times to fish, and speckled trout come into their best stretch from spring through fall.

June through September. Both are hot, busy and inside hurricane season. Destin adds grouper and king mackerel, and red snapper is the summer fish there, inside a season set by regulators. Louisiana’s summer brings tarpon off Grand Isle, snapper and flounder in Jefferson Parish waters, and marlin and mahi offshore of Venice.

October. Both have a reason to go. The Destin Fishing Rodeo runs all month, and the harbor is busy. In Louisiana, October is a top month for bull redfish moving inside and big yellowfin around the shrimp boats.

December through February. Louisiana has more to offer. Redfish and trout stay in the marsh, and winter can produce big tuna and wahoo near the Midnight Lump when weather allows. Destin’s winter list is shorter: snapper on bottom trips and tuna for boats that run far offshore.

By budget

Both carry our moderate cost profile. Destin keeps costs down with party boats, a pier day pass and surf fishing, and many trips include the license. Private offshore charters priced per boat and long runs to deep water are what push it up.

Louisiana is drive-to from New Orleans with modest lodging in the fishing towns. Guided marsh trips are the core cost, and offshore rig trips cost more and run longer. See our charter cost guide.

By travel time

Destin: fly into Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, or drive. It is a common road trip from Atlanta, Nashville, New Orleans and Houston.

Louisiana: fly into New Orleans and drive. Lafitte is about 30 minutes away, Grand Isle just over an hour and a half, and Venice is at the end of Highway 23 in Plaquemines Parish.

By party

Young kids. Destin. Four-hour party boat trips aimed at kids, rental gear on the pier, free beginner classes and calm bay water are hard to beat. See fishing with kids.

Couples and non-anglers. Destin, or Grand Isle on the Louisiana side, for its beach and state park. Venice is mostly a serious fishing town with limited non-fishing activities.

A group of serious anglers. Louisiana, especially Venice, where you can split days between marsh redfish and offshore rigs.

By fishing style

Party boats and shared trips. Destin. Trips run from four hours to overnight, with bait, tackle and license included.

Inshore and sight fishing. Louisiana’s marsh, for redfish and trout most of the year. Venice suits anglers who want marsh and offshore days from one base; Grand Isle suits a beach-based trip with pier, surf and kayak fishing.

Bottom fishing. Both. Destin catches snapper all year on bottom trips, and grouper from summer into fall. Louisiana lists snapper as a summer target.

Billfish. Neither is a billfish-first trip. Destin treats sailfish and marlin as trophies for long offshore days in the warmer months, and Venice sees marlin in summer.

Before you book

  1. Check the license. In Destin, guided trips and party boats usually cover it; on your own, Florida requires a license for anglers 16 and older, with exemptions. In Louisiana, LDWF sells a 3-day Charter Passenger Saltwater license. Our licenses guide explains more.
  2. If you are planning around red snapper, check FWC and NOAA Fisheries for the current season first.
  3. Leave a weather day, and read our safety and weather guide.
  4. Read the full pages for Destin and the Louisiana Gulf Coast, and our redfish and tuna species pages.

Seasons here are broad patterns from local tourism and fishing sources, not promises. Ask your captain what has been biting in the weeks before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a family fishing trip?

Destin, for most families. It has kid-focused four-hour party boat trips with bait, tackle and license included, a long public pier with rental gear, a calm bay and free beginner classes from the visitor bureau. Grand Isle is the family pick on the Louisiana side, with a state park pier and swimming beach.

Which is better for redfish?

Louisiana. Redfish are caught year-round in the marsh and nearshore, October is one of the best months as bull reds move inside, and summer brings sight-casting in the shallows. In Destin, redfish are mainly a surf fish during the March-to-November surf season, with fall the time to try.

Where should I go for offshore tuna?

Venice, on the Louisiana coast, fishes the offshore rigs for yellowfin and blackfin, with summer steady, October strong for big fish and winter productive when weather allows. Destin lists tuna as around all year for boats that run far enough offshore, and deep water is a short run from its harbor.

Is hurricane season a concern for both?

Yes. Both sit on the Gulf, inside the Atlantic hurricane season of June 1 to November 30. Keep summer and fall plans flexible, read cancellation terms and consider travel insurance.
